Willow
S01:E09

Willow

Known as a well kept secret and hidden pearl of the P2P scene in Europe, Aljoscha makes a rare appearance in this podcast and brings us into his mind and the theoretical computer science of P2P data structures. As someone who can relate to Lockharts Lament and in the pursuit of beautiful solutions, Aljoscha found an idea which could be improved on, and in turn presented the solution of Range Based Set Reconciliation, although he prefers a less formal description than the published paper. As one of the two main developers of Willow, Aljoscha, together with Sammy, keeps a dev-diary filled with music and illustrations. Willow is created by Sammy and Aljoscha and stems from Earthstar which in turn comes from Scuttlebutt as the late Cinnamon’s re-imagining of Dominic Tarr’s idea 🐌🌱✨

New Design Congress
S01:E08

New Design Congress

This bubbly conversation traces the outlines of security work going beyond the raw code and into the nitty gritty of social webs and structural design. Cade Diehm walks us through the collapse of the third wave of decentralization, and the realizations along the way. He also introduces the frameworks of EXCILIC and ANXIETY which are at the core of the studio ParaReal’s work. To read more of the works of cade, see the New Design Congress page and find articles such as the essay we talk in depth about in this episode “This is Fine: Optimism and Emergency in the P2P network “

Qaul
S01:E07

Qaul

This episode explores the varied means of communicating when the internet gets shut down with the qaul قول project, a delay tolerant network. Stemming from the arab spring and seeing the need for a means of communicating when authoritarian governments shut down the internet, Mathias Jud shares insights from the past 15 years of solving the challenge of communication during internet outage, from the early days of talk back to NSA to current challenges. In this interview projects such as libp2p, Meshtastic, Reticulum and Meshcore are mentioned as well as the upcoming events of DWeb Camp 2026 in Berlin, Global Gathering in Portugal , Battlemesh in Croatia and Kollapscamp in Berlin

Radicle
S01:E06

Radicle

In this episode we embark on a learning journey guided by Fintan and Lorenz into the realms of forges, patches and repositories. Radicle is a code collaboration platform built for developers who value transparency, ownership, and open-source resilience, building on peer-to-peer and local-first infrastructure for censorship-resistant collaboration directly over Git. This conversation flows through many avenues from federated forges to DIDs and the next steps on the horizon for Radicle. Also mentioned is the Digital Identity report by Cade Diehm and New Design Congress. Connect to the Radicle team and community on their multi-lane Radicle Zulip chat and learn more about sovereign Git collaboration.

CoMapeo
S01:E05

CoMapeo

Protecting indigenous digital sovereignty and planting the seed for a different relationship to technology, this episode covers the project of CoMapeo. Guided by Luandro who works at Awana Digital, and has walked many lands and spoken to communities across the world, while co-create what CoMapeo means in their contexts. Building on the protocol Hypercore, the offline-first capabilities of CoMapeo enable communities to map out their territories and fend off oil companies, preserve their cultures and spoken tongues through the sister project Terrastories and even support the data-gathering on the biological diversity of animals in remote regions such as the Meli bees project. Another sister project to CoMapeo is Āhau which supports the linage-tracking of Māori tribes in Aotearoa (New Zealand). As the largest active delay-tolerant and local-first implemented community project, CoMapeo shines brightly both in the present and as a guiding light for the future.

Hypercore in Rust
S01:E04

Hypercore in Rust

In this episode we talk to Blake who’s working on a Rust implementation of the Hypercore protocol. Hypercore (formerly known as .dat and part of the dat ecosystem ) is one of the oldest P4P networks. Blake presents two usecases for Hypercore as a protocol which have previously been under-explored but are highly promising—for RSS and for package-management—showcasing the versatility of P4P protocols and how there can be a larger ecosystem of P2P networks. Also mentioned in the podcast is the Pear protocol, Mapeo. and the chat app Keet. Find Blake on Bluesky and Mastodon.

Modal
S01:E03

Modal

Modal is a newly founded collective focusing on emancipatory technology through development, design, organizing and policy campaigning. Consisting of representatives from various communities within secure and open-source technology such as GNOME, the New Design Congress with Cade Diem, postmarket OS and p2panda. Find more Modal events, such as the Boiling the Ocean meetups on the event page. Recently they launched the first application Reflection which enables offline-first collaboration. To join developer meetups, see more information here. In this talk with Tobias Bernard we touch on topics such as permacomputing, 100 rabbits and the project Dark Crystal.

Peer-2-Peer starts with a connection. Iroh does just that. Floris joins us and brings us along in exploring the decisions along the way which have shaped Iroh into what it is today. In this episode we introduce how connections are made through ~NAT traversal~ for P2P networks, and why it matters at all. This is the first episode of Solarcast and the kick-off of the P4Podcast series.
